common questions

Can I use any hot chocolate mix?

Yes, feel free to use anyone you like. I would stay away from flavored hot cocoa mixes unless it’s peppermint hot chocolate for extra peppermint flavor. White chocolate hot chocolate mix and vanilla are delicious with peppermint.

Can I add coffee?

Yes, this drink is delicious with a shot of espresso or 1 cup of strong coffee. And, if you combine it with white chocolate mix it tastes an awful lot like Starbucks peppermint white chocolate mocha!

Can I use any type of milk?

Yes, this hot chocolate tea drink can be made with whole milk, almond milk, oat milk, or any other dairy-free milk you can think of. If you’re dairy-free I would just be mindful of the hot chocolate powder and check the ingredients. Many have milk powder but many do not, like Starbucks and Trader Joe’s sipping chocolate. You can also use hot water (heated in the microwave or with an electric kettle) instead of milk but it won't be as creamy.

Do you have a favorite peppermint tea?

Not really, I do love the peppermint caffeine-free herbal teas from Celestial Seasonings, but there are so many other great brands! I also like using a Moroccan blend to make a Moroccan mint tea latte is also good! If your tea doesn't seem very pepperminty, you can just add additional tea bags or try adding a few fresh peppermint leaves or a tiny amount of peppermint extract.

Do I need to remove the tea bag?

No, only if you think it’s in your way. I like to just leave it in my tea latte while I drink it so the peppermint flavor just keeps getting stronger!

Can I make this an iced peppermint tea latte?

Yes, to make it iced, just make it as directed but once steeped, leave it in the fridge to cool or pour it directly over ice. This works really well if you use frozen coffee cubes (you can just freeze leftover coffee in an ice tray to make these) for a peppermint mocha situation! This keeps the drink from becoming watered down as the ice melts.

Can I use cocoa powder if I don't have hot cocoa mix?

Yes, to use cocoa powder, use 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder and 4 tablespoons of maple syrup, honey, or simple syrup.

What should I top this tea latte with?

You top it with froth from a milk frother, whipped cream, crushed candy canes, a drizzle of dark chocolate, or chocolate shavings!
